Statistical Office in Katowice as a unit of public statistics services is subordinated to the Central Statistical Office and functions on the basis of:

• Law dated 29 June 1995 on Public Statistics (Journal of Laws from 2022, item 459 with later amendments),
• Directive No. 1 of the President of the Central Statistical Office dated 18 June 2012 on the granting of the statute to the Statistical Office in Katowice (CSO Official Journal, item 28 with later amendments),
• Law dated 1 November 2008 on Civil Service (Journal of Laws from 2008 No. 227, item 1505 with later amendments),
• Organization Statute of the Office introduced by the instruction No. 8 of the Director of the SO in Katowice dated 28 March 2013.

According to the above mentioned documents main duties of the SO in Katowice include:

• collection of data (including those from public administration information systems), preservation, gathering elaboration and analysis of statistical data,
•  conducting and realization of national censuses and other wide-range surveys on the territory of the Śląskie Voivodship,
• co-participation in works connected with the methodology of statistical surveys concerning the Śląskie Voivodship,
• identification and analysis of demands for statistical information by regions on the territory of the Śląskie Voivodship as well as proposing methods and forms of their fulfillment,
• dissemination and propagation of result statistical information concerning the Śląskie Voivodship,
• conducting surveys and analyses important from the point of specificity of the voivodship in cooperation with scientific-research units,
• Information suport of territorial self-goverment units as well as advisors and experts cooperating with territorial self-goverment,
• conducting works in the field of propagation and promotion of statistics and statistical knowledge, of which statistical education on the territory of the Śląskie Voivodship,
• co-participation in running works for the needs of regional statistics,
• presenting statistical information concerning the territory of the Śląskie Voivodship to govermental administration bodies, local self-goverment bodies as well as other recipients,
• conducting surveys, analyses and publication activities in the field of trans-border and euroregional statistics,
• administering country official registers:
  • REGON – entities of the national economy,
  • TERYT - territorial division of the country,
• in the part concerning the Śląskie Voivodship,
• completing the following tasks for public statistics as a whole:  
  • conducting works (as an author’s unit) in the field of regional accounts, connected with calculation of chosen categories of national accounts in regional breakdown, participating in international cooperation in the field of regional accounts,
  • conducting works in the field of financial market statistics and its entities, financial instruments, investment outlays and fixed assets,
  • conducting works in the field of environmental protection statistics, outlays and material effects of environmental protection and water management investments,
  • creation and running the statistical database containing data in the field of specialization of the Office,
  • conducting methodological works, preparing analyses and statistical elaborations as well as creation of database in the field of national sustainable development indicators,
  • conducting works on the use of data from administrative sources in public statistics,
  • recognition of demands for statistical information and analyses by territorial breakdown,
  • cooperation in preparing information and overall publications by regions,
  • conducting national design-programme works on regional accounts, environmental protection, manufacturing activities, finances of enterprises, research and development activities.
